Niwot is ranked No. 2 in 4A boys soccer this week. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The Niwot Cougars are making sure they aren’t forgotten when it comes to action on the pitch.

With impressive wins over Greeley West and Skyline, the Cougars made the leap from No. 6 to No. 2 in this week’s Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings.

They weren’t able to over take The Classical Academy, who held on to the No. 1 spot after claiming it last week.

Skyline was the lone addition to the 4A polls this week, coming in at No. 10. At 12-0-1, the Wolverines even earned a first-place vote this week.

There were no new teams that made their way into this week’s 5A poll. Broomfield remains the No. 1 team in the rankings and Cherry Creek made the biggest movement, jumping two spots from No. 10 to No. 8.

Kent Denver is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A. Vail Mountain made the jump from No. 4 to No. 2 thanks to wins over Moffat County and Colorado Rocky Mountain.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These are the final boys soccer rankings of the season with the state brackets due to be released next Sunday.

No. 2 KIPP boys soccer shows poise in win over No. 9 DSST-Stapleton

KIPP vs DSST-Stapleton boys soccer

(Andre Lyseight/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — With the Class 3A soccer playoffs looming, every game is going to count and Wednesday’s contest between KIPP and Denver Science and Tech Stapleton, two teams ranked in this week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, had major implications on the line.

And it was KIPP junior forward Jhovani Gonzalez lead his team to a 4-2 victory over DSST-Stapleton by scoring three of his team’s four goals.

What made the win more impressive was that the Tigers were without coach Uli Dahm. Assistant coach Garrett Schuck filled Dahm’s void and KIPP didn’t miss a beat.

“It’s easy to come in when you have a great head coach like Uli Dahm,” said Schuck. “He has implemented this system from the beginning, making it easy to step in his shoes when he is away.”

The Knights controlled the ball from the beginning and junior Victor Delgado almost scored early with attempt barely missing with the ball hitting the top of the goal post. Despite DSST-Stapleton controlling the ball, KIPP was able to put points on the board first. Gonzalez gained possession of the ball and with a powerful toward the center of the net, put his team up 1-0.

DSST-Stapleton sophomore forward Luca Bravo had multiple attempts to score in the first half, but came away empty handed. He had a nice shot up the middle that was blocked by Tigers goalie Julian Hernades.

Moments later he followed up with the same kick that was blocked once again by Hernades, however the ball reflected off his hands setting up Knights senior defender Soco Sandoval for close range goal tying the game at 1-1.

Before the half ended, Gonzalez was able to get the ball in traffic and maneuver his way through the defense with nice goal giving his team 2-1 lead before half.

Coach Schuck gave player of the game to Tigers junior defender Roger Hernandez, who had a great defensive game.

“I think we played good but there is room for improvement,” said Hernandez. “Winning every 50/50 ball, we’ve been working on that a lot. I think that’s what won the game.”

In the second half, KIPP came out more aggressive and controlled the ball. Gonzalez picked up where he left off before half with a nice crossover for an easy goal, putting his team up 3-1. Knights senior middle forward Fethi Elbeshir countered with a penalty kick goal, cutting the KIPP lead to score 3-2 with 17 minutes left in the game.

DSST-Stapleton picked up their intensity to try and erase the KIPP lead. Tigers senior Joe Barrios scored with a clutch kick from a distance putting the score at 4-2. KIPP was able to control the ball and kill time off the clock to end the game.

“I think we played with a lot of heart today,” said Schuck. “We came together as a team. We had a few mental mistakes that led to a few goals. Other than that I think we dominated the game. It was the best showing we had in a few weeks.”

DSST-Stapleton head coach Dave Dombrowski believes his team didn’t play their best Wednesday afternoon.

“They didn’t bring their ‘A’ game,” said Dombrowski. “We got out muscled and hustled by KIPP and they deserved to win. We have to keep playing strong and forget about today’s loss and bring it on Friday.”

The Knights will look to bounce back on Friday against Middle Park. Tigers will wait until next Wednesday to face Lake County.

Boys soccer rankings: The Classical Academy on top of 4A

The Classical Academy has taken over the top spot of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com soccer rankings. Broomfield and Kent Denver held on to their respective No. 1 positions in 5A and 3A.

The Titans came into the season with more returning talent than any team in 4A and have had their sights set on a state championship since day one. It appears that an early-season loss to Cheyenne Mountain hasn’t fazed them and they are now regarded as the top team in the state.

Also in 4A, Battle Mountain joined the rankings at No. 7 and Skyline made a jump from No. 5 to No. 2.

In 5A, Monarch (No. 6) and Cherry Creek (No. 10) join the rankings this week. Fairview made an impress jump from No. 6 to No. 2 and are barking at the heels of their area rival, Broomfield, for the top spot.

DSST-Stapleton and Fountain Valley are both back in the 3A top 10 after dropping out in recent weeks.

KIPP, Liberty Common and Vail Mountain each jumped three spots to land at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Boys soccer rankings: All three classes get a new No. 1 team

Three new teams stand atop this week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, meaning there’s a new No. 1 team in each classification.

Boulder (Class 5A), Evergreen (4A) and KIPP Collegiate (3A) all now lead their respective classes.

In 5A, Boulder moved up due in part to former No. 1 Broomfield’s loss to Mountain Range in overtime last week. The Panthers got eight of the 10 first-place votes to take over.

Fort Collins also moved up, to No. 2, as did No. 3 ThunderRidge and No. 4 Arvada West. Fairview rounds out the top-5. ThunderRidge jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 after an impressive week in which they outscored their opponents 11-3 in three games.

Broomfield fell to sixth, Cherry Creek is seventh and Rocky Mountain is up to No. 8.

Aurora Central and Far Northeast are this week’s newcomers to the 5A poll, landing at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

The top seeds from last week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings all fell out of place this week. In Class 5A, Broomfield was topped by Mountain Range in overtime making Boulder the new No. 1.

Former 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain was upset at the hands of Pueblo West, which helped Evergreen shoot to the top spot.

The occupants of last week’s 4A poll remain the same, but with Cheyenne Mountain falling out of the top spot, there was some shakeup in the order. Valor Christian jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 and Littleton landed at No. 6 this week, up two spots from their ranking last week.

After recording a 3-0 win over Kent Denver Thursday, the Kent Denver Sun Devils played Fountain Valley to a 1-1 draw, allowing KIPP to take over the top spot in 3A.

Other big moves were made in 3A as Faith Christian made the jump from No. 6 to No. 3. There were also three newcomers to the 3A ranks as DSST Stapleton (No. 5), Jefferson Academy (No. 8) and Fountain Valley — fresh off its tie with Kent Denver — (No. 10) all joined the poll this week

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Boys soccer rankings: Four new teams join 5A poll

Despite the top teams remaining the same in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A CHSAANow.com soccer polls, there was plenty of changes from last week.

Of the four new teams who joined the 5A rankings, two of them fell out of the polls just last week. Arvada West (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 9) rejoin the top 10 after playing their way out of last week’s rankings. They’re joined by Legacy (No. 8) and Rocky Mountain (No. 10), who make their first appearance in the polls this season.

ThunderRidge also made a significant jump this season, going from No. 9 to No. 6 after going 2-0 last week.

Broomfield remained No. 1 in 5A.

The 10 teams from last week’s 4A polls remained the same, but Valor Christian did jump from No. 8 to No. 4. Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the 4A ranking.

Pagosa Springs, which was unranked in the preseason, has made the jump to No. 3 in 3A this week. Salida climbs back into the polls at No. 5 after falling out of the top 10 last week. Aurora West lands at No. 8 as the other newcomer in 3A.

Kent Denver stayed on top of the 3A poll.

Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain new No. 1 in 4A

Cheyenne Mountain boys soccer opened the season with a big win last week, and finds itself ranked No. 1 in Class 4A this week.

Cheyenne Mountain beat then-No. 2 The Classical Academy 3-2 in a season opener. Coupled with former No. 1 Air Academy’s loss to Evergreen, Cheyenne Mountain took over.

Evergreen, No. 8 in the preseason, moved up to No. 2 in the 4A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. The Classical Academy is No. 3, and Littleton made a big jump from No. 7 to No. 4.

Denver West, unranked in the preseason, is No. 5.

Niwot held steady at No. 6, Air Academy dropped to No. 7 and newcomer Valor Christian is No. 8. Ponderosa is No. 9 and another newcomer, Greeley West, rounds out the ranking.

Things were pretty crazy in the 5A ranking, which added six new teams. Yes, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams — Broomfield and Boulder — held their respective spots, but that was just about it.

(Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

Fort Collins was one of six new teams to the 5A poll, checking in at No. 3. (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

Joining the ranking were No. 3 Fort Collins, No. 5 Rangeview, No. 7 George Washington, No. 8 Denver East, No. 9 ThunderRidge and No. 10 Far Northeast (formerly Montbello). Fairview (No. 4) and Cherry Creek (No. 6) were the other holdovers from the preseason.

The 3A poll also had similar shakeup. Four new teams joined: No. 4 KIPP, No. 8 Pagosa Springs, No. 9 Colorado Springs Christian and No. 10 Denver Science & Tech Stapleton.

Kent Denver retained the No. 1 spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.
