No. 7 Montrose opens season with win over Montezuma-Cortez

(Josue Perez)

Preseason seventh-ranked Montrose faced Montezuma-Cortez on Friday and the Indians won 19-3 in four innings.

The Indians opened with three runs in the first inning with Gage Wareham and Rocco Manuel had RBI hits while Nolin Boone held Montezuma-Cortez scoreless in the first frame. Cortez scored one in the top of the second and Ty Blackmer scored on a steal of home. The Indians added two more in the bottom of the second and led 5-1 after two innings. Cortez scored two in top of the third to make it 5-3. John T. Carver had a two-run double and the Indians exploded for eight runs to break the game open.

“I think we played a great game,” Montrose senior Keagan Goodwin said. “Everyone did their job and we executed like we needed to. But it wasn’t even close to perfect. And we will be working hard in practice. My boys busted their butts and we will continue to do that. We’re going to keep bringing it to anyone we play and we do that through being a single unit, and being the toughest team on the field.”

Goodwin and Wareham had RBI singles, Zeke Steenburgen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the Indians led 13-3 after three innings. Boone struck out two batters in the top of the fourth. The Indians scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the final score 19-3. Torrie Eckerman had a two run home run and Boone had a two-run single.

“Kids played good,” Montrose coach Landon Wareham said. “Got another game tomorrow. Need to come ready to go. We are too young and inexperienced not to show up ready to play ball.”

Steenburgen finished with three RBIs, Wareham had three hits and three RBIs and David Dominquez had two hits and three RBIs. Boone struck out five batters.

“We played a great game early with Ernie  Padilla on the mound and Montrose put it on us after we went to our pen,” Montezuma-Cortez coach Tim Passell said. “We had some positive momentum off the very good pitcher Nolin Boone. We are definitely getting off to a late start and bit behind due to our guys barely getting off the football field less than two weeks ago. We are playing baseball so it’s much better than where we were last year. We got a few hard hits off a very good pitcher.

“Our sophomore catcher, Braden hit one off the wall and that was a great two out hit bringing us a couple of runs. Looking forward to tomorrow (Saturday) as we will have our ace Ty Blackmer going for us against Battle Mountain.”

4A boys basketball: Mead tops Montrose for emotional state title win

COLORADO SPRINGS — Mead felt like it had all the necessary tools to capture a boys basketball state championship. Then at the oddest time, life decided to throw a curveball. Nick Basson, the third leading scorer for the Mavericks, suffered a stroke.

He was loaded onto Flight for Life and taken to Children’s Hospital in Aurora. Just over a week later, he sat on the bench to watch his teammates battle to a 68-44 win over Montrose to capture the Class 4A boys basketball championship, the first for the team since 1957.

“It was just over a week ago that this happened with Nick and this team is just so connected,” coach Darin Reese said. “To get the news of Nick, it was shocking to everyone and it’s still hard to believe. It made us tighter after we found out that he was going to be ok.”

It also gave the team an emotional boost that they sustained all the way through the postseason. And they walked onto the floor of the Broadmoor World Arena, each player donned a warmup shirt with No. 1 and “Basson” on the back, keeping their teammate — a teammate they would’ve loved to have on the floor — on their mind.

But the game had to go one. Elijah Knudsen was electric in the first quarter, scoring 13 of the Mavericks (15-3 overall) 21 points in the quarter.

“He’s gotten so good at understanding what a good (shot) is and when to get his teammates involved,” Reese said. “When he hits one or two, you want to give him a little bit of space because he can get going.”

Montrose (18-1) found their footing in the second quarter and closed the Mead lead to just four points at halftime, but the Mavericks turned the jets back on in the third and never looked back.

Despite not having JP Shiers on the floor for much of the second and third quarters because of foul trouble, Mead was able to play at their pace and continue to knock down open shots.

“I enjoy doing that,” Knudsen said. “But definitely my teammates are a bunch of help. Marcus Santiago, our senior, we don’t win this game if he doesn’t show up the way he did tonight.”

Knudsen led all scorers with 30 points and Santiago had 18. Ashden Oberg led Montrose with 17.

Once the Mavericks had the lead and they knew the emotional implications that would come with a win, there was no choice but to finish the game strong. What made the quest all the more important was that Basson was able to be on the bench, actively rooting for his guys as if he was sitting out for a sprained ankle.

“I actually got to go and surprise the guys at practice (last week),” Basson said. “Seeing the Final 4 was great and being able to come down here and be a part of this, it was exciting. It was fun.”

Montrose boys basketball beats Steamboat Springs to move to 4A Final 4

MONTROSE — For the first time since 1992, Montrose boys basketball is headed to the Final 4.

In a matchup of unbeaten teams, Montrose topped Steamboat Springs 61-47 in the Class 4A Great 8.

“Great team win tonight,” Montrose coach Ryan Voehringer said. “I thought our team defense was outstanding. Steamboat is very well-coached and very hard to guard. A credit to my guys.”

Aside from an early 6-4 Steamboat lead, Montrose controlled the game from the start. It was 16-9 after the first quarter, 31-21 at halftime, and 43-32 after three quarters.

“I thought we did a nice job of executing on the offensive end and putting guys in nice positions to score against a very good defensive team,” Voehringer said. “I’m so happy for these guys. They’ve worked so hard for this opportunity. I told them on the way out of the locker room enjoy the moment and take nothing for granted.”

Luke Hutto scored 24 points and aded four assists and five rebounds to lead Montrose.

“I think it was our best team win of the season,” Hutto said. “Everyone brought something to the table and we all scored and defended when we needed too. I’m excited to play in the Final 4 and we’ve definitely earned it.”

Ashden Oberg added 18 points and nine rebounds.

“It was a physical game and they were a good team and we came together as a team and played our game,” Oberg said.

Trey Reese scored 11, had five rebounds, and three assists.

“That was one of the best games we ever had,” Reese said. “I think Luke and Oberg had big possessions in the game. We got to the line and made our free throws. Another step closer to what we all been working on all year.”

Steamboat was led by Cade Gedeon, who had 17 points, and Parker Lindquist, who had nine.

“It wasn’t our night,” Steamboat coach Michael Vandahl said. “The more aggressive team. I am extremely proud of our seniors.”
