Eagle Valley wrestling wins the tough Mel Smith Husky Invite

(Alan Versaw/CHSAANow.com)

FLORENCE — According to rankings going in, the Mel Smith Husky Invitational probably should have been Pagosa Springs’ show. Don’t tell Eagle Valley wrestling that, though.

The Devils came to prove something. And, after 31 hours of wrestling, they had made a few new believers.

“We’ve had a tough time at this tournament in years past. We knew coming into this tournament we had to wrestle at our best, ” remarked head coach Luke Cross.

And that’s exactly what the Red Devils did.

Although Eagle Valley didn’t end up with even one individual title, but they came together as a team, placed in half of the weight classes, and kept piling up points until the rest of the 30 teams at the tournament were in the rear-view mirror.

That’s not to say the Devils had no special efforts.

In particular, Cross singled out the effort of 182-pounder Davis Ward: “He just really stepped it up. He’s overcome a lot of adversity in his life, and he got third place today. … The kids kind of rallied around that and we all wrestled better with his leadership.”

How much better? Eagle Valley logged three second-place finishes, two thirds, and two fourths.

The seconds went to Matthew Medina at 106, Lucas Comroe at 132, and Noah Baldwin at 152. The Devils did not bring wrestlers in two weight classes, but every wrestler they did bring contributed to the overall winning point total of 168 points.

Hot on Eagle Valley’s heels were the teams from Eaton and Pagosa Springs.

Like Eagle Valley, both Pagosa and Eaton found it difficult to win weight classes. Eaton got their lone individual title on the last match of the evening, courtesy of a late flurry that gave Jeremy Murano the title at 285 pounds.

Pagosa’s Cameron Lucero wrestled perhaps the most entertaining final of the entire evening, going back and forth with Clay Yarnell of Olathe before getting the pin at 3:06. Though both are from the western slope, Lucero had not met Yarnell until this evening. Lucero offered, “I knew he was good on top.”

But Lucero gave Yarnell very little opportunity to show any of that. On the other hand, Lucero took some opportunities that might have left a lesser wrestler on his back. In the end, though, it was Yarnell who ended up on his back.

Lucero smiled about it after it was over, “If you don’t take chances, you don’t win.”

Valley led all schools with three individual titles on the weekend — Isaiah Rios at 138, Colin Brown at 152, and Jaziah Whaley at 160. As sharp as the Vikings were in the middle weights, however, they simply didn’t have enough wrestlers with them to make a serious run at the title. They will, however, undoubtedly be heard from at state.

The only other team with multiple individual title winners was Elizabeth with two. Kris Kramer took the crown at 113 pounds and Abe Leonard pinned his way through the bracket at 195.

Other individual title winners included Brady Hankin of Woodland Park at 106, Ethan Andrade of Lamar at 120, Zach Loft of Sterling at 126, James Ruona of Canon City at 132, Wyatt Pfau of Brush at 170, Nathan Johns of The Classical Academy at 182, and Eli Smith of Salida at 220.

Tim Yount’s rankings generally held true, but there were bits and pieces of new ground turned over.

Ethan Andrade of Lamar dropped down from 126 to beat 120 No. 1 Isaiah Gamez of La Junta. Isaiah Rios jumped all the way up from No. 5 at 138 to win the title over previous No. 1 Dylan Yancey of Eaton. Most impressive of all, Colin Brown of Valley was ranked No. 14 at 145 before taking the crown at 152.

But the disruption there, significant as it is, probably still doesn’t eclipse the disruption brought by the rise of Eagle Valley as a certifiable 3A team contender.

Football roundup: Erie makes a statement with another top-10 win

(Steven Higgins)

A week after beating sixth-ranked Silver Creek, Erie football has another top-10 feather in its cap.

On Friday night, the Tigers, now ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, beat No. 4 Berthoud 33-7.

“Playing in the Tri-Valley (League), it doesn’t get any easier,” coach Chad Cooper told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “I told our kids to enjoy this one tonight, but tomorrow morning we’re back to work and getting ready for Holy Family.

“It’s kind of similar to a playoff run where you can’t let down,” Cooper continued. “It’ll be good to kind of prepare us for the playoffs. You can’t have any let downs in the playoffs. It’ll be a great test for us.”

Erie’s Jacob Mansdorfer hit Alex Mathis with a touchdown pass just before the end of the first half to push the Tigers’ lead to 20-7.

Noah Roper rushed for two second-half touchdowns, and also recovered two fumbles on defense. He returned one of those for a touchdown. Roper had 165 yards rushing.

“Noah, obviously, is a talented kid. He kind of does it all for us,” Cooper said. “He runs extremely hard and is able to grind on people, too, with the style that we have on offense.”

6-man: (5) Prairie 44, (1) Peetz 41

Prairie got the go-ahead score with 11.8 seconds remaining to secure the upset of previously unbeaten Peetz.

“It was just a dive to the right to Trenton Holzworth, one of our seniors, and he was able to power through a couple of kids and was able to get the ball in,” coach Justin Kerns told the Scoreboard Show of the winning score.

Prairie is now 6-0 this season.

“The players here are excited, the kids are excited,” Kerns said.

2A: (3) Platte Valley 42, (6) Sterling 21

Tied at 21 at halftime, Platte Valley reeled of 21 unanswered points in the second half to secure a big win and move to 6-0 this season.

“It was one heck of a game up here for homecoming week, that’s for sure,” coach Troy Hoffman told the Scoreboard Show.

Hoffman praised his team’s effort on defense, which forced four turnovers.

“The kids created some opportunities and some turnovers,” Hoffman said. “We just needed to do that, play a little more aggressive in the second half, and when you get four turnovers, a lot of times good things happen for you, and it sure did for us tonight.

Senior Zach Waite had four touchdowns, including runs of 55 and 50 yards, and Ernseto Rios and Trevon Wehrman also score the the Mustangs.

Platte Valley had more than 400 yards of total offense.

Football roundup: Garnes leads No. 3 Eaglecrest past No. 5 Grandview

Eaglecrest Grandview football

More photos. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Victor Garnes had two receiving touchdowns, and third-ranked Eaglecrest football beat Grandview 21-14 in a big Class 5A game on Friday.

Eaglecrest is now 3-0, while Grandview moves to 2-1.

Both of Garnes’ scores came on great throws from Raptors quarterback Jalen Mergerson, a senior.

The first came on fourth-and-11, midway through the second quarter. The second was a 34-yard catch and run that saw Garnes juke out a crowd of defenders on his way to the end zone.

Kenny Wanting got Eaglecrest started with a 2-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Grandview’s Aaron Harris blocked a punt that the Wolves recovered for a touchdown to cut into Eaglecrest’s lead early in the third quarter. They had possession deep in the Raptors’ territory on their next possession, but the drive stalled and the Wolves turned it over on fourth down.

Eaglecrest then went back up 21-7, and held that lead for most of the fourth quarter.

Grandview did score with 31 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game again, but Eaglecrest recovered the onside kick.

South again took the lead late in the third quarter at 42-35, and West again responded with a touchdown with four minutes to play.

In overtime, West scored first, only to miss an extra point attempt. South also scored — and also missed an extra point.

South opened the second overtime with another touchdown, but again missed the extra point. West responded with a score, and the extra point was good, giving the Cyclones the win.

Four minutes later, Roosevelt’s Trent Beall scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 14-yard rush.

Jaydon Elkins had a rushing touchdown for Longmont.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

St. Mary’s has taken over the top spot of the Class 3A girls basketball rankings.

The Pirates notched a win on Friday night, taking down rival (and No. 10) Manitou Springs, impressing enough voters to move up from their previous spot at No. 2.

They take the spot from Sterling who falls to No. 2.

Only one new team broke into the 3A poll as Olathe comes in at No. 8.

In 5A, Grandview hangs on to the top spot while receiving the news that Michaela Onyenwere was named a McDonald’s All-American.

Highlands Ranch jumps one spot to land at No. 2.

At No. 10, Rocky Mountain is the only newcomer to the 5A poll.

Pueblo South keeps the No. 1 spot in 4A with Evergreen also holding firm at No. 2.

Mesa Ridge made a three-spot jump to land at No. 4 this week.

Palisade (No. 9) and Windsor (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A rankings.

Paonia received 16 of 17 first-place votes to keep the top spot in the 2A rankings. At No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, Lyons and Swink each jumped two spots from a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 2A poll.

The same situation applies to the 1A poll as all 10 teams from a week ago remain in the top 10, with just a tweak here and there.

Kit Carson remains at No. 1, but Antonito takes the No. 2 spot from Fleming who falls one spot to No. 3.

South Baca (No. 6) and Kiowa (No. 7) also traded spots from last weeks rankings.

Football roundup: Mullen storms back to beat Fairview

Mullen rallied from down 23-0 at halftime to stun Fairview with a 37-30 win in a top-10 game in Class 5A football on Friday.

The second-ranked Mustangs scored right as the second half opened, and though No. 8 Fairview answered to make it 30-7 in the third quarter, Mullen just wouldn’t quit. It was 30-14, then 30-22, and then it was tied.

Finally, with 2:16 remaining, the Mustangs took their first lead of the game. It was 37-30, with Mullen scoring 30 unanswered points.

Fairview did have a final drive, but Mullen turned the Knights away.

Marcus McElroy had three touchdowns for the Mustangs.

(9) Holy Family 43, (8) Mead 35

Holy Family picked up a big top-10 win this season that moved the Tigers into sole possession of first place in the Tri-Valley League.

“We talked about what it would take to put ourselves in a situation to win a league championship, and they responded really well,” Holy Family coach Mike Gabriel told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It was a great battle.”

Holy Family led 9-0 after the first quarter, and 22-13 at the half. But Mead kept fighting, and kept the game close until the end.

In fact, Mead had one final drive that Holy Family had to turn away.

“With a few seconds left, they still had a shot,” Gabriel said. “Our kids responded to put it away.”

[divider]

3A: (9) Sterling 27, (6) Weld Central 13

Not only did Sterling hand Weld Central its first loss this season, the Tigers also snapped their 12-game winning streak, which was the longest in the state.

“It was good battle across the board, two teams that kind of wanted it pretty bad,” coach Rob Busmente told the Scoreboard Show. “It came down to two plays that we were fortunate enough to be able to capitalize on.”

Sterling led throughout, going up 7-6 after the first quarter, and 20-13 at halftime and after the third quarter. The Tigers added another score early in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.

Sterling is now 5-3 following an 0-3 start, and sits in first place in its league, the Patriot East, at 4-0.

“It’s been good, it’s been fun,” Busmente said. “The kids have been showing a lot of resiliency and a lot of perseverance to go through some of those things. We ran a pretty tough gauntlet there at the beginning with some of those top teams.

“We were able to come back and regroup and put a pretty good push here toward the end,” he added. “Hopefully we can keep riding this momentum as we’re riding out the season.”

[divider]

2A: (7) Bayfield 23, (5) Delta 7

Bayfield broke open a close game on a pick-six early in the fourth quarter, and is now 6-2.

The game was tied at 7 at halftime.

“I thought our team came prepared to play,” coach Gary Heide told the Scoreboard Show. “We just felt that if we stayed with it play by play by play, that we would be the one to make the plays in the second half.”

“They are one tough team,” Heide added of Delta. “They are going to be reckoned with in the playoffs.”
