MANITOU SPRINGS — Every game serves a different purpose for a season. Manitou Springs and Peyton both advanced in last year’s postseason, but neither team finished exactly where they wanted.
They clashed Friday night in Manitou in a makeup game of what was supposed to be each team’s season opener. The Class 3A No. 4 Mustangs rolled to a 51-26 but each team took a different lesson from the outcome.
Manitou (2-0 overall) is coming off its first outright Tri-Peaks League championship in program history. After losing two significant seniors, the team feels prime to repeat that feat from last year and try to accomplish something special in 2021.
“Last year we built a lot of really good momentum,” senior Isaiah Thomas said. “We’re coming into this season off a really heartbreaking loss and we’re coming back hungry. We lost some great seniors, but we have a lot of young kids coming up and stepping into really important roles.”
Thomas led the Manitou scoring effort with 13 in the win, but the real story is what the team did defensively. The team allowed just one field goal in the first half and gave a glimpse of their ability to limit baskets just as much as they can score them.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
“I thought they did a good job of being patient,” coach Brian Vecchio. “They didn’t try to force things on the offensive end, they stuck to just defense and rebounding which is where we want our backbone to be.”
It wasn’t an ideal start to the season for the 2A No. 7 Panthers (0-1), but coach Jedd Sims knows the value an early game against the Mustangs will bring as they try and make their way back to the Class 2A Great 8.
Sims hoped the Panthers could slow the pace and keep the game close. He felt that plan gave his guys an opportunity to make a move late.
“Our plan was to take the air out of the ball, chew up their legs if we could,” Sims said. “We were confident that if we could keep it close, we could make a run late in the game. Unfortunately, some turnovers led to some easy buckets. They’re just good. It’s hard to stall when they’re just on you defensively like that.”
Gavin Miller and Brennen Meyers each scored seven points to lead the team, all of which came in the second half for both players.
As Manitou chases its second regular season league title in as many years, it showed a versatile offensive attack when needed. Thomas’ points came from mid-range jumpers and attacking the basket while the Mustangs got plenty of points in the paint as sophomore John Maynard scored 12 and senior Lars Marquardt added six.
“Offensively, we’re a great threat,” Thomas said. “We have some big guys and some shooters, but our defense is where we want to shine. Stopping teams from being comfortable is going to be what gets us to the next level.”
Manitou begins league play on Monday with a trip to Florence.

The 2020 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
Because there will be two football seasons during the 2020-21 school year, this is the all-state football team for Season A. There will be a separate all-state football team released for Season C.

PEYTON — Cold, wind and mist are the kind of weather factors that will take the air out of any passing game.
That’s why it was all the better for the Class 1A No. 4 Florence Huskies. A heavy ground attack, led by Jacob Kennedy’s four rushing touchdowns led the Huskies to a 48-6 win over No. 10 Peyton.
Taking the ball after winning the state-wide coin flip, the Huskies (3-0 overall, 2-0 Tri-Peaks) immediately went to their bruising running back Owen Busetti. The senior set up several of Kennedy’s touchdowns while adding two of his own. They did all as wind speeds picked up and temperature started dropping.
“You find out who the toughest team is (in this weather),” Busetti said. “You have to be tough and you have to be gritty.”
It’s the standard that the team hopes to maintain for the remainder of the year. If Florence is going to be stopped, Kennedy and Busetti must be slowed down and that’s a task well easier said than done.
The Panthers (2-1, 1-1) struggled to get any offense going during the early stages of the game but got several chances by recovering two Florence fumbles.
But even with the turnovers, it was tough to generate momentum as Peyton went into the locker room at halftime having gained fewer than 50 total yards.
“We just stuck to the grind,” Busetti said. “We had to focus and execute on every play.
A big run from Wes Hart on the first offensive drive for Peyton certainly got the attention of the Huskies but they quickly adjusted and slowed the attack.
Peyton also got their hands on a little momentum late in the first half thanks to sophomore quarterback Gunner Graham’s ability to find open receivers through the air.
Florence quickly quelled any Peyton momentum to start the second half as Kennedy found the end zone on two quick possessions to initiate the running clock.
Coach Jeremy Nix was pleased overall with the performance from his team but wouldn’t mind seeing some mistakes cleaned up as the Huskies still have a big game against CSCS on the horizon.
“You have to be able to play through games like this,” Nix said. “It’s not getting any warmer. We have to find a way to make sure we’re not turning the ball over.”
The key for the team going forward will be its ability to run the ball as effectively as it did Thursday night.
That means a lot of push up front from the offensive line and finding the gaps and moving through them quickly.
“Our offensive line takes pride in its run-blocking,” Nix said. “And those backs are pretty special.”
With a shortened schedule this season, the games feel more like a sprint than a marathon and Nix’s boys don’t mind taking that expression literally with its powerful run game.
