All-state football teams for the 2018 season

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

Brotherhood and football: Diaz family and Justice are a match

The 8-man football team at Justice High School jumped into a 15-passenger van and headed on a five-hour trek to play their first game of the season in the mountain town of Hayden.

Hayden, Garrett St. Clair run past Justice in 8-man football matchup

BOULDER — Hayden football took control from the start on Saturday night.

The Tigers recovered the opening kick and took over on the Justice 21-yard-line. Patrick Hunter capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run in Hayden’s 56-12 win over Justice.

“Recovering that was huge,” Hayden coach Ryan Wilkie said. “We haven’t played yet, so that month off, we didn’t know what we were going to get. The kids stayed focused through that break and you’ve got to give them a lot of credit.”

The Hayden defense came up huge, while the offense put in a steady scoring dose led by quarterback Garrett St. Clair. Hayden kept Justice from crossing the 50-yard-line until under a minute left in the first quarter.

“I thought we were physical,” Wilkie said on what stood out to him. “It’s been a long time since we were that physical.”

After the defense forced a three-and-out, St. Clair rolled out right and found an open receiver in the endzone to give Hayden a 12-0 lead with 5:30 in the first quarter.

St. Clair had five total touchdowns and two interceptions for Hayden.

“(St. Clair) had a big day for us,” Wilkie said. “He’s been playing since he was a sophomore at quarterback and at corner since he was a freshman. He’s earned where he’s getting to.”

Another Justice punt put the ball in St. Clair’s hands and he took advantage again.

“I have to go back to my offensive line,” St. Clair said. “I gotta worship those guys, man. They were outstanding tonight. I’ve got to give it to my two backs, (Hunter) and Frentress, they stood out tonight. They rushed the ball as best they could.”

St. Clair converted a big 4th and nine by scrambling to his left, then he connected with Hunter on a 14-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up 20-0.

With Justice facing a 4th and one from the 44, the Hayden defense held, and the Tigers took over the ball. And again, St. Clair padded Hayden’s lead. The Tigers quarterback took a designed run for a four yard touchdown run.

“We had great blocks up front,” St. Clair said. “Our offensive line kicked some butt and our backs were speedy. We stayed up, drove our feet and did what we were supposed to.”

The next drive, Hayden ripped off two big runs to push the lead to 36-0. Daylon Frentress broke off a 37-yard run, then Hayden ran it in from the 41.

A 65-yard touchdown pass from Enrique Romero to Justin Hunyadi drew Justice closer before halftime, then Mario Diaz intercepted a St. Clair pass, and Justice started grabbing momentum.

St. Clair rose to the occasion, this time on defense. On fourth down and goal from the three, St. Clair intercepted the pass in the endzone and Hayden took a 36-6 lead into the break.

“We knew we had a gameplan coming in,” St. Clair said. “We figured that we were ready to go, and we did what we needed to do.”

And again, the Hayden quarterback intercepted a pass. This time, St. Clair returned the ball 45 yards to the five. St. Clair took the snap at quarterback and finished the job with a five-yard touchdown run to cement the score at 50-12 before the backups took over.

Football roundup: Valor Christian beats Mullen for the first time

(Paige Stingley/Valor Christian Athletics)

Luke McCaffrey rushed for two touchdowns as Valor Christian got its first-ever win over Mullen on Friday night.

The Eagles, top-ranked in and two-time defending champions of Class 5A, beat the No. 4 Mustangs 31-7.

With senior Blake Stenstrom out due to a concussion, it was the first career start at quarterback for McCaffrey.

“Any player that comes into the game just wants to do everything that they can,” McCaffrey told Altitude TV after the game. “I don’t really focus on the snaps, just making the snaps count. I really just went out there and tried to do everything I could.”

Valor Christian was 0-2 against Mullen in the short history of their rivalry, having lost to the Mustangs last season and in 2012.

“It was incredible, just to do something that nobody at Valor has done before,” McCaffrey told Altitude. “That was one of our themes all week, just focusing on that: do what’s never been done, and do everything you can for your brothers.

“I thought each and every player contributed. … It was special to see.”

The Eagles’ Joshia Davis had a key touchdown late in the first half when he scored off an option pitch with three seconds remaining. Davis had set the Eagles up at the 2-yard-line with a long run just before the half.

Valor Christian travels to play at Greater Atlanta Christian next week, while Mullen continues a tough early slate of its own by playing No. 5 Regis Jesuit. The Mustangs lost to No. 2 Pomona in Zero Week.

3A: (3) Holy Family 56, (8) Palisade 20

(@HF_Athletics/Twitter)

Holy Family went on the road and put on a show.

Palisade actually had rallied from an early 14-0 hole to tie the game at 14-14, but then Holy Family connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Stone Samaras to Kyle Helbig on 4th down and 1.

It was quickly 35-14 at halftime, and then Samaras found Helbig again on the third play of the second half to make it 42-14.

Samaras finished with four touchdown passes and a rushing score. Helbig had three receiving touchdowns.

2A: (7) Sterling 42, (8) D’Evelyn 28

Sterling moved to 2-0 with yet another big top-10 win on Friday night.

The Tigers beat No. 6 Resurrection Christian in Zero Week.

“We’ve had a pretty good run these two games of being able to put together enough to win a football game,” coach Rob Busmente told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game.

4A/5A: Boulder 27, (9) Denver South 25

(Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Boulder won on the final play of the game after an 80-yard kickoff return set up a 1-yard touchdown.

On Friday, the Panthers jumped out to a 16-0 lead, and also led 18-6 at halftime. Denver South battled back and eventually took the lead, but last-second heroics from Patrick Fletcher on his return set up the winning touchdown by Shane Provost.

Provost’s score came on a shovel pass, according to BoCoPreps.com.

It was a great note to start the 2017 season for the Panthers. Last season, Denver South beat Boulder 56-17 to open the season. Boulder went on to finish 1-9.

“There was 12 seconds left and I wanted to score and I wanted to get that ‘W’ because I knew it would change the program and change the environment,” Fletcher told BoCoPreps.com of his kick return.

Chase for the state wins record

Both Kent Denver and West Grand won on Friday night, which means that Kent coach Scott Yates will retain sole possession of the state wins record.

Kent, ranked No. 1 in 2A, beat Eagle Valley 41-0. That is win No. 317 for Yates.

West Grand, No. 6 in 8-man, beat Sanford 40-0. That is win No. 316 for coach Chris Brown.

Notables

  • In 8-man, Justice beat Nederland 44-13. It was the first on-field game for new Nederland coach Beth Buglione, who is the first female coach in state history. Nederland only had nine players available on Friday, according to the school. Here’s BoCoPreps’ story on the game.
  • In a rematch of the 6-man title game, No. 3 Cheyenne Wells beat No. 1 Flagler 70-20. It’s complicated, but many of Flagler’s players played at Hi-Plains last season when Flagler dropped its program. This season, Hi-Plains dropped its program, and now many of those players are playing for Flagler.
  • In a big 5A game, No. 5 Regis Jesuit fought off No. 3 Cherry Creek, 25-20. The Raiders led 12-0 after the first quarter, but the Bruins slowly chipped away. They cut it as close to 19-14 in the fourth quarter but Kiahn Martinez had a TD that sealed the game with a minute to play for Regis.
  • 2A No. 3 La Junta beat Gunnison 42-0, and 1A No. 1 Strasburg beat No. 8 Burlington 24-6. That extended each team’s winning streak to 14 games, which is the most in the state.
  • Caliche snapped a 15-game losing streak with a 50-28 win over Kiowa.
  • In the Pigskin Classic, Pueblo West beat Pueblo County 28-7.
  • Another local rivalry: Fort Collins beat Fossil Ridge 17-6. Fort Collins finished minus-5 in turnover margin but still won. “Our defense stuck their neck out there, and they played hard the whole night,” coach Eric Rice told the Scoreboard Show.
  • In 1A, Monte Vista upset No. 9 Cedaredge 31-8. “We just kind of wore them out in the second half,” coach Manny Wasinger told the Scoreboard Show.
  • In 2A, No. 9 Faith Christian edged No. 6 Resurrection Christian 9-0.
  • 4A No. 5 Windsor beat Vista Ridge 14-3 in the return of coach Chris Jones. Jones took a year off of coaching before returning to the sidelines this fall.
  • 6-man: No. 6 Stratton/Liberty ran away from No. 7 Genoa-Hugo 51-14. “It was a weird 6-man game,” coach Toby Kechter told the Scoreboard Show. “Usually, it’s a two-or-three touchdown game and you’re nervous as heck, but our defense was so good that it just felt really good and our kids were really confident in what we were doing.”
  • 8-man: No. 3 Hoehne edged No. 4 Sargent 30-27. “Things went our way in the end,” coach Gabe Dasko told the Scoreboard Show. “I just kept telling our kids: ‘You guys have got to learn to finish in the end.’ Our two big leaders, Jacob Yates and Trystan Moltrer, stepped up and made some big plays for us.”
  • Grand Junction beat local rival Grand Junction Central 21-0.
  • Buena Vista and Alamosa didn’t kick their game off until 9:32 p.m. due to a shortage of officials. They ended at 11:45 p.m., a 37-7 Alamosa win.

All-state football teams for 2016 season

The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

Football roundup: Central (G.J.) ends its 21-game losing streak

It had been more than two seasons since Central (Grand Junction) had won a football game. Friday night, the Warriors ended a 21-game losing streak with a 41-32 win at Vista PEAK in Class 3A.

The Warriors led 20-8 in the second quarter, but it quickly turned into a back-and-forth game. Vista PEAK took a 32-27 lead in the third quarter, but Tonka Littlefawn scored on a 36-yard run to give Central the lead for good at 34-32 with 9:54 to play in the game.

Central then sealed it five minutes later when Littlefaw added a 15-yard score to make it 41-32 following a bad snap on a punt.

Littlefawn finished with three scores. Justin Eller and Kian McAdam also had touchdowns.

The Warriors’ last win came 46-26 at Hinkley on Nov. 3, 2011. It was on the same field — at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

5A: (8) Regis Jesuit 48, Mullen 40

Regis Jesuit, for the second week in a row, found itself locked in a battle late in the fourth quarter. This time, the result went the Raiders’ way.

A week after losing 27-14 to No. 2 Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit had to put away rival Mullen, a team that refused to go away. The game featured seven ties or lead changes.

Mullen led 21-20 at halftime and 34-27 late in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit tied it at 34 with less than a minute to play in the third.

Alex Barnes then scored on a 14-yard run to give Regis the lead at 41-34 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, and the Raiders added another score six minutes later.

But Mullen wasn’t done. Jovan Tafoya hit Ryan Manning on a 40-yard pass for a touchdown with two minutes to play, and the Mustangs drove down for one final chance in the final minute but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-12 from inside the 20.

3A: (9) Roosevelt 20, Loveland 15

Loveland seemed to have pulled the upset — but Roosevelt scored the winning touchdown with 14 seconds left.

Loveland led 15-14 at the half, and it stayed that way for nearly the entire second half. But Roosevelt got the ball with 3:18 to play, and slowly marched its way down the field. Then, with 19 seconds left and facing third down and goal at the 1, the Roughriders’ Christian Majzack scored the winning touchdown.

Adrian Pastrana then had a game-sealing interception on Loveland’s ensuing drive.

The two teams combined to fumble 15 times, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald.

2A: (5) Florence 13, (2) Faith Christian 7

This one came down to a goal-line stand at the end. Florence held firm, and held on to win.

Faith Christian had four shots at the end zone from inside the 10, but Florence didn’t bend. The last stop came with one second remaining.

“We took a timeout just to regroup them,” Florence coach Jeremy Nix told ColoradoPreps.com‘s Scoreboard Show. “The boys … just bowed their necks and got after it. We rode the ‘D’ that far, so we were at the point where we could’ve called a timeout to try to save some time, but we had confidence in them and they showed up at the end there.”

3A: (6) Discovery Canyon 44, (4) Holy Family 28

Discovery Canyon rallied from a 20-17 deficit at halftime to pull off the upset on the road.

“Tonight was a little bit of a heart-attack game,” Discovery Canyon coach Shawn Mitchell told the Scoreboard Show afterward.

The Thunder actually led 14-0 early before surrendering the lead in the second quarter. But they then reeled off 28-straight points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

“It was a little bit of a roller-coaster ride for the coaches, to say the least,” Mitchell said.

The third quarter scoring spree was sparked by Blake Lawrie’s touchdown return on the opening kick of the second half.

“Boy, that really helped us,” Mitchell said. “That kind of got spirits back up again, because I think at the end of the second half, they were wondering, ‘Oh, what just happened?’ I think it was, ‘OK, we’re back where we need to be.'”

It was the second-consecutive big win for Discovery Canyon, which beat Silver Creek in Week 1.

8-man: (9) Springfield 36, (4) Hoehne 6

Springfield pulled off the upset at home.

“Both of us grounded and pounded against each other, just kept hitting and hitting and we knew one of us was going to wear out,” coach J.J. Quick told the Scoreboard Show after the game. “We knew our game was to do what they normally do: just keep pounding and banging up front.”

Notables

  • Cedaredge upset 2A No. 10 Olathe on Friday night. The final was 2-0, and no it wasn’t a forfeit. Weather played a role, with the lone points coming on a safety from a snap through the endzone.
  • Rifle, No. 5 in Class 3A, beat Jefferson 64-6. The Bears have outscored their first three opponents by a combined 182-19.
  • Lakewood, a 5A team, knocked of 4A No. 2 Montrose 47-35 on the road. Montrose kept trying to creep back into the game, but Lakewood seemingly scored a touchdown to answer each score. We’ve got photos of the game here.
  • Fountain-Fort Carson beat Legacy in overtime, 20-14.
  • Durango trailed 14-0 but then scored 34 unanswered points en route to beating Aztec (N.M.) 34-28 on the road.
  • Montrose and Grand Junction exchanged leads five times before the half on Friday night. The Tigers trailed 22-20 at the break, but would go up 50-22 with 10:42 to play. They’d have to hold on, though, in winning 58-45. At one point, Fruita cut it to 50-45 with 2:25 to play.
  • Aspen running back Ryan Fitzgerald had 343 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries in his team’s 23-14 win over Steamboat Springs.
  • In 8-man, No. 6 Merino beat No. 5 Simla 18-16.
  • Alameda edged Skyview in overtime, 56-55. Nick Wotton had five touchdowns and 297 yards in the losing effort.
  • 2A No. 8 Lamar beat 1A No. 2 Centauri, 20-8.
  • Valley’s Victor Delgado rushed for three touchdowns as his team beat Fort Lupton 31-0.
  • Rocky Mountain Lutheran’s Zach Schlittenhart had 231 yards and four touchdowns rushing on just 11 carries as his team beat Justice 64-28.
  • Lutheran beat Frederick 52-7. Quarterback James Willis threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Eight of his passes went to Joshua Clausen, who had 157 yards and two touchdowns. Through two games, Clausen has 376 receiving yards. It’s very early, but he’s on pace to break the single-season receiving yardage record, set just last season by Fairview’s Sam Martin (1,860).
