No. 8 Heritage Christian girls basketball taking aim at deep playoff run

(Photo courtesy of Heritage Christian High School)

When Joe Packard took over as the girls basketball coach at Heritage Christian, the program was struggling a bit. His hope was relatively easy to comprehend, he wanted to provide stability to the program which he anticipated would lead to success.

That seems to be the way things have worked out for the Eagles and he’s hoping that this can be the year the team makes a deep Class 2A playoff run.

“It had to be a culture change,” Packard said. “We were living right on the border of being a 1A or 2A team. One year we went to state at 1A and then the next we were there as a 2A team. Most good programs and most good teams would say it takes time.”

It seems that each year, the Eagles play at the level of championship contenders only to stumble in the state tournament. This year, Packard is hoping that his girls will get gel at the right time and make that deep playoff run that he knows they’re capable of.

Kali Siemers is fifth in the state regardless of classification in scoring. She’s scoring 24.2 points per game and is the offensive focal point of an Eagles team that is off to a 7-0 start to the season.

They’re also getting big points contributions from Avery Hughes at 17.7 points per game and Savannah Brown at 11.5 points per game. Brown is also the top rebounder in the state, pulling down 15.5 boards in each game that she plays in.

Everyone on the roster has a role and each playing understanding their role is what makes the Eagles a dangerous team as the postseason inches closer.

“We talk about that all the time, everybody having a role,” Packard said. “Like (Tuesday) we just played Dayspring Christian and Kali had a real rough start. SHe fouled out in the third quarter and Savannah ended up scoring 17, but then Avery went and scored 26. What’s special about this team is that if someone is having a rough time, someone’s right there to fill the void.”

That’s what he’s hoping can happen when the postseason rolls around. Last year, the Eagles were one win shy of advancing to Loveland for the 2A Great 8. The year before, they reached the tournament as the No. 7 seed, but lost in the first round.

After seeing what his girls are capable of this season, he’s hoping that they can find the playoff success that’s evaded them in recent seasons due to the 2A field being traditionally strong.

“There are so many good teams out there,” Packard said. “Any given week, every team is dealing with a number of different variables that anyone is capable of winning a title. I don’t know why we can’t be in that mix.”

If they continue to play at the high level they’ve played at this season, it’s not far-fetched to think that they’ll be right there.

2A state cross country: Kidus Begashaw wins first title ever for Lotus; Vanguard’s Ella Johnson claims championship

COLORADO SPRINGS — What Kidus Begashaw accomplished Saturday was almost unfair.

Begashaw, a senior from Lotus School for Excellence in Aurora, easily outpaced the competition to win the 2A Boys Cross Country State Championship by 30 seconds with a mark of 16:17.

Facing runners that had been training to win a state title for many years, Begashaw came quite literally from nowhere, becoming a state champion after only discovering distance running six months ago.

“I saw (2019 state champ Isaac Roberts of Lyons) do this last year, and I told myself, I want to do that,” Begashaw said. “I said I’m going to work hard for that, train hard, and now I became a state champion.”

Begashaw also became the first Lotus runner ever to become a state placer, let alone a state champion.

Before discovering running, his passion had always been basketball and soccer. Playing as a midfielder in soccer, Begashaw learned he had superior speed and endurance.

Now, after trying cross country and succeeding at a high level, Begashaw’s post-high school goals have changed from soccer to running.

“Now I’m going to focus on running in college,” Begashaw said. “I mean, I’m Ethiopian. It’s in my blood.”

Much like Begashaw, Vanguard’s Ella Johnson came out of nowhere to emerge as the 2A girls cross country state champ, utilizing a late kick in a remarkable comeback win.

For much of the race, Johnson trailed Buena Vista’s Zaila Smith and Peyton’s Eowyn Dalbec, who were running side-by-side in what was shaping up to be a potentially exciting finish to the girls’ 2A title race.

“They had such a lead on me, and they were so so far ahead, I thought I was done,” Johnson said. “This is super unexpected.”

With 800 meters to go, Johnson managed to make up ground late, climbing the final hill before the finish line to win by a remarkable nine seconds over Dalbec with a mark of 19:34, her season best.

“I thought I wasn’t ever going to get close,” Johnson said. “But then they started to slow down, and then I said to myself, I’m so close. I need to catch them, and I did.”

With the win, Johnson became Vanguard’s first ever state champion.

A first-time team champions was also crowned Saturday.

On the girls’ side, Buena Vista claimed its first team title, led by third-place finisher Mallory Salazar, and flanked by three finishers in the top 12.

Heritage Christian won its third boys state championship, barely edging Lyons by five points to win the crown. Despite not having a single finisher in the top 10, four runners in the top 30 helped deliver the crown.

Cross country: Eaton grabs wins at Wolverine Invitational

The cold weather didn’t slow things down too much as Eaton’s Logan Gullett and Andie Rasmussen set the tone for all cross country runners at Wednesday’s Frontier Academy Wolverine Invite.

Gullett cleared the finish line in 16 minutes, 55.2 seconds to win the boys race while Rasmussen finished in 20:04.9 to take the girls title.

Although Eaton got first place finishes in both races, it was unable to grab team win in the event.

Heritage Christian Academy got a second-place finish from Xander Stanton and teammate Ryan O’Loughlin finished sixth to get the Eagles the overall team win.

Estes Park’s Nolan Marske took third at 17:18.8 while Northridge had Colton Magnuson and Jaeden Nelson finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

Northridge had a much better showing in the girls race as Victoria Perales took fourth and Karley Beck took sixth. Overall the Grizzlies had four girls finish in the top 10 which gave them enough points to get a team victory.

Estes Park lost a close battle for that top team spot but got a solid showing from its top runners. Freshman Heather Russell took fifth at 21:55.2 and Charlotte Raymond’s 22:16.8 was good for eighth.

Heritage Christian’s Ainsley Stanton finished second overall at 20:45.3 and Severance’s Hannah Schissler finished third at 20:56.7.
