Palisade had a key fourth-down stop near the goal-line in the fourth quarter as the fifth-ranked Bulldogs upset No. 3 Holy Family 42-34 in a huge Class 3A football game on Friday evening.
PD Riddle ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, while Prescott Price and Isaac Maestas each had two touchdowns.
“It was like an arena football game,” Palisade coach Joe Ramunno told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show on Friday. “We had to take away possessions, and we were able to do that.”
The game tilted back-and-forth throughout, though Palisade never trailed. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.
“That’s what we knew we had to do, because they are so potent offensively,” Ramunno said. “They came back, though. They brought it back to 28-21 at the half. … We just knew we had to keep a possession ahead as much as we could, but they made a run for it there at the end.”
Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig, who set the state passing record two weeks ago, continued his torrid early-season pace. He threw for three more touchdowns on Friday night, giving him 16 over three consecutive games. That breaks the previous record of 15 set by Grand Junction’s Doug Musgrave in 1988.
Trailing 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, Holy Family marched down to the Palisade 5-yard-line, but the Bulldogs turned away the high-powered offense. Palisade scored on Maestas’ 87-yard touchdown on its next drive.
“They had a great drive going on, and our defense really stepped up to get a great finish on it,” Ramunno said. “We were able to stop that fourth-down conversion, and then just a just a few plays later, Isaac was able to get into the end zone.
“It was a big turnaround for us. They were going in to tie it up, and we ended up getting it back to (a 14-point lead).”
Holy Family again cut into the lead to make it 45-34 with 55 seconds to play, but couldn’t recover an onside kick and Palisade was able to hang on.
Maestas rushed for more than 200 yards for Palisade.

5A: Mullen 38, (2) Pomona 31 (OT)
Mullen rallied from down 24-13 in the third quarter to eventually take a 28-24 lead over the second-ranked Panthers with seven minutes remaining.
Pomona went up 31-28 with a minute remaining, and then Mullen hit a field goal to send it to overtime.
Once there, the Mustangs pulled off the biggest upset of the young season.
[divider]
5A: Arapahoe 17, (5) Grandview 14
Arapahoe pulled off the upset thanks to the above field goal with a little over a minute to play.
The Warriors led 7-0 at the half after Mitch Pennetta’s fumble recovery for a score. Grandview tied it up, but then Pete Mitchell hit Connor Williams for a 69-yard passing touchdown to give Arapahoe another lead.
Arapahoe is now 3-0, including two wins over ranked teams.

6-man: (1) Fleming 66, (3) Pawnee 22
Fleming was up 24-6 at the half, then exploded in the second half to take the important 6-man matchup.
“We came out aggressively,” Wildcats coach John King told the Scoreboard Show. “We just executed really well. We kind of went right at them and actually probably ran the ball more tonight than we have been lately.”
[divider]
5A: (7) Regis Jesuit 19, (9) Cherokee Trail 14
The Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, and held on for the important top-10 win.
Cherokee Trail cut it to 13-7 in the third quarter, but Regis Jesuit pushed it back to 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter.
The Cougars did score again in the final minutes, but Regis Jesuit got a game-ending interception.
[divider]
5A: Horizon 18, (8) Fairview 14
Horizon rallied from a 14-0 hole to score the game’s final 18 points and pull the upset.
The Hawks cut into that lead to make it 14-12 at half, then took the lead on Jared Jiron’s 1-yard touchdown with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.
Horizon made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, and then recovered a muffed punt with two minutes left to hold on and win.
The Knights had won 20 consecutive games in the regular season prior to Friday’s loss.

4A/3A: (9) Palmer Ridge 48, (9) Lewis Palmer 14
Isaiah Sanders threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns as Palmer Ridge won General Palmer’s Cup over its rival.
Palmer Ridge (3-0) stretched its lead to 28-0 before Lewis-Palmer finally got on the board, and then cruised from there.

Rocky Mountain, and sophomore Tyler Hyland, are the new No. 1 5A baseball. (Dennis Pleuss)
Another week, another new team atop the Class 5A baseball rankings.
Rocky Mountain became the latest team to ascend to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll this week when the Lobos received eight of the 15 first-place votes and edged No. 2 Mountain Vista. Cherry Creek, the former No. 1, fell to third this week.
Rocky is the third team to lead the 5A ranking this season following preseason No. 1 Regis Jesuit and Creek.
Fairview stayed put at fourth in this week’s poll, and Grandview stayed at fifth. Behind them, three new teams joined: No. 6 Monarch (6-0-1), No. 7 Fruita Monument (12-0) and No. 9 Heritage (7-2).
ThunderRidge is No. 8 this week, while Regis is No. 10.
In 1A, there’s also a new No. 1. Eads takes over after getting four of the eight first-place votes. Former No. 1 Holly dropped to third. Community Christian is second.
That 1A poll added Granada (No. 8) and Cornerstone Christian (No. 9).
The other No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A).
Other newcomers include No. 9 Wheat Ridge in 4A; No. 8 La Junta and No. 9 Bayfield in 3A; and No. 9 Ellicott in 2A.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Cherry Creek is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A baseball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.
The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.
However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.
Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.
There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.
With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

In mid-February, Chatfield sent out a release announcing the hire of baseball coach Brandon Stone.
Stone was up against it. Chatfield’s first game was exactly 30 days away.
Well, Stone’s Chargers are now 11-0, and sit atop Class 5A baseball’s Wild Card points by a sizable margin. Through the weekend’s games, Chatfield has 114.091 points; second-place Regis Jesuit is at 111.364, third-place ThunderRidge has 109.000.
We’re only at the midpoint of the 2014 season, but Chatfield is just two wins away from matching its entire total from all of last season, when the Chargers went 13-10.
Still, that record is somewhat deceiving. Chatfield cruised through the district round to reach the final eight last year (where they went 0-2). Now, they’re carrying the momentum on through to this spring.
Leading the way has been junior Kyle Winkler, who is batting .559 with a team-high 18 RBIs, five doubles and a home run. It’s a dangerous lineup, which features seven players hitting .390 or above, and five kids with double-digit RBIs. The latter group doesn’t even include Blake Moore, who has three home runs.
The staff, led by a trio of seniors, has been good, too. Nick Chamberlain has a 1.33 ERA in a team-high 21 innings pitched. Patrick Barder carries a 2.58 ERA in 19 innings, while Travis Schnoor is at 3.50 in 12 innings.
Chatfield hasn’t won a game in the final eight since 2008. Does that change this year?
Pomona OL commits to CU
Pomona senior-to-be Dillon Middlemiss committed to the University of Colorado on Saturday.
It had apparently been a goal of his since middle school. From his Twitter account:
He’s the third local football player from the class of 2015 to commit publicly thus far. Pine Creek defensive back Avery Anderson and Valor Christian defensive back Eric Lee have both pledged to Nebraska.
Middlemiss is 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds.
Valor Christian football’s national schedule

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)
Next season, Valor Christian football will play against East High School out of Salt Lake City, Utah, according to NationalHSFootball.com.
East went 13-1 last season, with the lone loss coming in the Class 4A championship game. The Leopards feature senior-to-be Christian Folau, a linebacker who has committed to Stanford.
The two teams will play on Sept. 5 at Valor.
It is the third out-of-state team the Eagles will play next season. They’ll open up at Bonneville, Idaho, on Aug. 22 (Zero Week), before returning home to play Pomona on Aug. 29. The East game is the following week, and then Valor — a five-time defending champion across classes 5A, 4A and 3A — hosts Chandler (Ariz.) on Sept. 12.
Denver East’s Carey gets his own day
Gov. John Hickenlooper and Rep. Angela Williams proclaimed April 10 “Rudy Carey Day” for the Denver East coach.
Here’s a picture our Tom Robinson snapped at the announcement last week:

Short stuff:
- Denver East guard Dom Collier was an honorable mention All-American pick by MaxPreps.
- On a related note, Collier’s Angels finished at No. 10 in MaxPreps’ national rankings. It’s the highest finish for a boys team in this state since the ranking started in 2005-06.
- Regis Jesuit’s girls basketball team finished at No. 11 in those same rankings. It, too, is the highest finish ever for a girls team from Colorado. That ranking started in 2005-06, as well.
- Cherry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson won the 700th game of his career on Wednesday. Friday, the Bruins’ Brian Perry won his 200th as boys lacrosse coach.
- Here’s a quick roundup of recent football coaching hires. Included: Rod Dobbs at Chaparral, Jeff Krumlauf at Doherty, Brian Tinker at Fossil Ridge and Craig Ball at Gilpin County. As always, here’s our football coaching changes tracker.
- Manitou Springs may be the next to fill its vacancy, according to our Dan Mohrmann. The school interviewed candidates on Friday.
- April’s Legislative Council meeting is Thursday. This post will take you through the ins and outs of what will be voted on and discussed. Among the topics are a potential 5A football seeding committee. Find the full agenda, including PDFs of all proposals, here.
- Here’s an interesting take on youth sports from Changing The Game Project, where they examine “an adult driven, hyper competitive race to the top in both academics and athletics that serves the needs of the adults, but rarely the kids.” This culture, they argue, “produces bitter athletes who get hurt, burnout, and quit sports altogether.”

Regis Jesuit remains atop the girls basketball ranking in 5A this week. (Mark Adams)
Poudre, winner of its past five games, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball ranking.
The Impalas are now 16-5 and are ranked No. 10.
Regis Jesuit continued to lead the ranking, as the Raiders have all season long. In fact, the top-6 all stayed the same this week, including No. 2 Grandview, No. 3 Lakewood, No. 4 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Fossil Ridge and No. 6 Cherry Creek.
Highlands Ranch moved up to No. 7 from No. 9 and Rock Canyon from No. 10 to No. 8. ThunderRidge dropped one place to ninth.
Each of the other four No. 1 teams stayed put, too. Those are Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A).
With the regular season ending this weekend, these will serve as the final rankings of the season.
Complete rankings for all classes are below.
