State gymnastics: Thornton’s Hailey Like shines during individual event finals

(Paul Soriano/CHSAANow.com)

THORNTON — Thornton’s Hailey Like put the rest of Class 5A on notice Saturday at the state gymnastics individual event finals.

She’s one of the best in Colorado, and the freshman is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Two days after finishing fourth in the all-around competition on Thursday night, Like, a student at Horizon who competes with Thornton, finished first in the balance beam (9.625) and the vault (9.725) and finished third in the uneven bars (9.5) and the floor exercise (9.625) as she announced her presence with authority.

The fact that she’s only a freshman is not lost on her, and for a brief moment on Saturday it gave her pause. But not for very long.

“Going into today I felt a little bit nervous because I’m only a freshman and I knew that everybody else here (for finals) is more of an upperclassman,” she admitted. “But going through the meet I realized that even though I am a freshman I can’t be underestimated and that I am as good as all of them.”

You can say that again.

Beam and vault were the two events in 5A’s first rotation, and Like, not to mention the rest of her Thornton teammates, really loved her performances.

She scored a 9.625 in the beam to finish ahead of Overland’s Bailey Rodriguez (9.525), then moved over to the vault, where she scored a 9.725 to finish ahead of Pomona’s Mia Tims (9.65) and Kaylie Berens (9.65), the two-time 5A all-around champion.

“It feels great,” Like said. “I feel really accomplished and I’m glad that my team was here to support me.”

In the second rotation, Like scored a 9.625 in the floor exercise to place third behind champion Mabry Robinson of Overland (9.85) and Berens (9.7). She then scored a 9.5 in the bars to finish behind champion Isabella Gee of Lakewood (9.6) and Kalise Newson (9.525) of Pomona.

“Bars and floor are two of my harder events,” Like revealed.

For Thornton head coach Phil Sailas, the results were not unexpected.

“I knew we had a great chance at winning beam and vault, so it was definitely not a surprise to me for her to do that,” he said. “She’s fantastic. Everything she does, she does well. She’s perfect. She is very meticulous about how she does everything.”

Like is just the third athlete in Thornton history to win a state championship, and the first since Melissa Frank won the all-around crown in 1999. In 1984, Chrys DeAragon captured state in the uneven bars.

Despite being a freshman, Like was ready to roll at the state meet.

“She always has a game-face on. She is always ready to rock and roll. It doesn’t seem like she ever gets rattled,” said Sailas. “To have a gymnast like that … she’s just very precise and has no nerves. That’s want you want out of a gymnast.

“She’s a little rockstar. And she’s a freshman.”

In 4A, Mia Curry of Niwot followed up her all-around championship from Friday night with a first-place finish in the floor exercise on Saturday as she tallied a 9.5 score to finish ahead of of Green Mountain’ Lucy Meinert (9.375) and Emily Kruse (9.3).

“I did super well,” Curry said of her routine. “I went really hard for all of my tumbling passes, and tried to make my leaps as pretty as they could be and my jumps as pretty as they could be. Smiling was key, too. It all happened, and it all paid off.”

“She did great,” said Niwot coach Marisa Purcell. “She’s a sophomore. She’s definitely one of the younger ones on our team. She came out and just gave it her all. I told her just to have fun. She went out and had a blast. She showed everything off. She performed her routine very well.”

In other 4A individual events, Mya Nguyen of Standley Lake won the uneven bars with a score of 9.475, Sarah Hitchcock of Green Mountain captured the vault with a score of 9.5 and Meinert earned the top podium spot in the balance beam with a score of 9.375.

Broncos high school football coach of the week: Thornton’s Nick Trombetta

(Photo: Adam Hothersall)

Nick Trombetta wants to build something at Thornton. He calls it a “Trojan Spirit,” and talks about how he wants to return his Class 4A football program to relevancy.

Well, that plan got a major spark in the form of a 27-20 win over rival Northglenn on Friday night. It was the first time Thornton had beaten their rival in 14 years.

It means the I-25 Bowl trophy will be housed at Thornton High School for the first time since it was created.

And alumni have taken notice.

“It’s a big deal for our community,” Trombetta said this week.

Now, Trombetta has been named the Denver Broncos High School Football Coach of the Week.

The Broncos coach of the week is selected in partnership with the Broncos and CHSCA. Find a complete list of winners on this page.

Casey: Can you tell why you decided to become a coach and what you enjoy about it?

Trombetta: I really wanted to become a coach because I kinda had some negative experiences playing high school ball. So really wanted to make a difference in that aspect because I understand, for a lot of kids, this is it for them.

You don’t want to have the last time you coached or the last time you played to have been soured by a negative interaction with a coach or anything like that. Then initially, way back when I was in middle school, I had a coach that I had decided I was done with football and he actually had stopped me walking home from school my eighth grade year and convinced me to play youth football and like suited me up out of old equipment in his garage.

He put me out there. They put the ball on my hands for the first time as a running back and I kinda refound my love of the game. So it was like both positive and negative experiences that really drove me to wanting to coach and make a difference that way.

Casey: What do you think your players feel like it’s like to be coached by you?

Trombetta: Well I can say probably depends on who you ask. I think my passion is probably the most prevailing factor. I’m a little more toned down this year than I was last year, but I think that they can just really see my passion for them and their lives post high school.

I am really just trying to make sure that they’re going to be good citizens, dads, husbands — whatever they’re going to be after high school — to try to make sure that they’re ready to do that type of stuff. I always try to make myself the worst coach on my staff from a football standpoint.

Casey: That’s smart.

Trombetta: Yes. I mean, they’re not gonna confuse me for — you know, name of famous coach. They’re not going to mistake me for any of that stuff. But they just know that I’m the father figure for a lot of guys and I’m going to hold them accountable for things that other people in life aren’t ready to hold them accountable for.

Casey: So do you have an overarching goal or maybe mission or vision that you’re trying to accomplish at Thornton?

Trombetta: Well, being a grad there, we always have fond memories of our high schools and I really wanna try to return this back to relevance. It’s been been a really, really long time since Thornton with the relevant football program. And part of it is just trying to make it important at the school to play again.

Our participation numbers have risen slightly from last year to this year. So in order for the participation numbers to keep rising, we have to make it for kids to want be football players there. And it’s kind of where we’re at right now is just trying to make it an atmosphere that kids want to be a part of.

At the end of the day, I want to return back to 5A as a program. I think that’s important. We’re the only Adams 12 program that’s not 5A. So I would definitely like to be able to return back to 5A, be able to field three levels, and part of that is winning games so that kids are excited to come out and play.

Casey: Can you take me into your pregame locker room on Friday? What did you guys talk about?

Trombetta: I kind of flipped flop back and forth between not trying to make it bigger than it needed to be because it’s Week 1, but also honoring the tradition of the rivalry. We talked a lot about how Thornton had won nine times in the past 52 years, 53 years.

Casey: That’s crazy.

Trombetta: And we hadn’t won obviously in 14 years. So a lot of it was, “We can either concentrate on what history dictates or, we can embrace who we are in the moment.”

Casey: That’s interesting because some coaches try to avoid stuff like, “Oh, we know we haven’t beat them in 14 years,” but you guys met that head on and they were fully aware of that?

Trombetta: Oh, 100%. Yeah. I wasn’t gonna run from it because I think that it’s important.

We have some initials on the back of our helmets from some former Thornton players throughout the years that have passed away just this past year. And there was a big talk about how we don’t take what happened last year or the year before or the previous 14 years into a game. You take the spirit of all those people that played before into it.

I kind of framed it as like you have one school just trying to avoid losing and I view us as somebody that’s trying to like establish a spirit, a Trojan Spirit that we’re trying to bring to the forefront.

Casey: What’s interesting about that game though is you kick kicked the ball off and then had an hour weather delay and then didn’t you come out and fumble on your first possession?

Trombetta: First two possessions!

Casey: So how did you recover from that? That’s a really disjointed start, I imagine.

Trombetta: Our boys just don’t — we just worry about what we can control. I mean, past years, a Thornton football teams would have definitely folded up camp at that point. But this is a special group of young men and they just don’t — sometimes things for good and for bad just don’t register with them. And I don’t think that they ever felt in any true danger.

I think we worry about us. We don’t do a lot of, “Oh, we’re playing so-and-so this week.” Although we talked about the streak against Northglenn, and this week, we’ll talk about how Delta’s got a really good squad. They got a really good quarterback. But we don’t — we’ll game plan for what they do, but we kinda worry about us.

And we knew against Northglenn, watching film and with some of the weapons we have on offense, we knew that we were going to have shots. Our defense was playing well. And I think once the defense got that stop on that second fumble, we were able to settle in, and then Ethan was able to find JR on that first touchdown. We kind of knew we were rolling at that point.

Casey: Well, and then you had that spurt at the end of the first quarter where all of a sudden you’re up two touchdowns. What was it like then, and what was the halftime locker room like?

Trombetta: We went up 20-7 and we were kind of in uncharted territory. We’re all kind of looking around and we hadn’t played well, but we were still up a couple of touchdowns. We went into halftime and we gave the whole, “It’s 0-0,” like all coaches say.

I mean, you could see it in their eyes, and our boys, as much as we condition them, I was shocked: We were gassed. Boys were starting to cramp up. I think a combination of a lot of things. I think that the juices were flowing and they were going hard.

We talked about, “You guys got 24 minutes to rewrite your legacies,” and (laughs) they made it interesting.

Casey: Yes, they did at the very end there. So, what’s the reaction been like since the win?

Trombetta: The reaction has been crazy. I’ve heard from a lot my coaching mentors, like coach Marquez, coach Brothers at Holy Family. Some guys that I lean on. I heard from some of the guys that I coached with the Denver North. I heard from guys at Prospect Ridge.

The outpourings of, “Way to go,” it’s been really, really awesome. The school is on cloud nine right now. I mean, that trophy only exists because it has all that red on it because Northglenn made it. We didn’t make the trophy.

Casey: Is that right?

Trombetta: The trophy has never actually been at Thorton High School before. It has never been there. I just dropped that off this morning. It was like the Stanley Cup and it’s spent the weekend at my house.

I mean it’s a cool feeling. I think the boys are — I gave him Monday off to kind of refuel and relax. It’s all kind of a whirlwind. I mean just the alumni the kids rushing the field.

I think my favorite moment of the whole thing is I was probably the first one onto the field and then I turned around, I was just like a wave of humanity.

And people started hugging me and I didn’t even know who anybody was. And then my daughter who is a senior at Thornton came running and hugged me and she was sobbing and it was just like this whole — I don’t want to downplay, I know it’s one game and it’s Week 1 — but when you’re talking about 10 wins in 53 years and two wins in the past 30. I mean it’s a big deal for our community.

The alumni has been very excited. I mean, the people that I don’t even know are reaching out to me. Yeah, the whole thing, it’s just been a surreal, and then this Coach of the Week honor it’s like, I’m just a guy, you know, standing on the sidelines at a 4A school in Thornton.

It’s all a little bit surreal and it’s all because the boys refused to be No. 15.

Thornton football beats Northglenn to capture I-25 Bowl for first time in 14 years

(Courtesy of Thornton HS)

Thornton beat rival Northglenn on Friday night, 27-21, securing the I-25 Bowl for the first time in 14 years.

The Trojans had been 0-11 against the Norse since 2005. Their last victory in the series came via a 44-33 win on Oct. 21, 2005.

But, on Friday night, as both teams opened the 2019 season, Thornton raced out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, and added a third-quarter touchdown to push their advantage to 27-7 going into the final frame.

Northglenn rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but a final pass into the end zone fell incomplete as time expired, setting off a celebration on the Thornton sideline.

Ethan Gonzales threw threw touchdown passes to lead his team.

The game, which was delayed an hour by lightning, didn’t started out well for Thornton. Northglenn grabbed an early 7-0 lead following a Thornton fumble. The Trojans also fumbled away their second possession, but were unfazed as they forced the Norse to punt.

Two possessions later, Gonzales threw a 15-yard touchdown with five minutes to play in the first quarter. Then, in the final minute of that quarter, Thornton recovered a fumble at their own 35-yard-line, and promptly threw a long touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead.

Thornton then recovered another fumble on Northglenn’s next possession, this time deep inside Norse territory, and punched it in with 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Suddenly, it was 20-7.

Things stayed that way until Gonzales’ third passing TD of the night with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Northglenn scored a touchdown with six minutes remaining in the final quarter, and another with two minutes to play to cut it to 27-21. Thornton recovered ensuring the onside kick, but Northglenn forced a punt.

The Norse had one final shot at the end zone from the 30-yard-line with seconds to play, but the pass fell incomplete:

5A state gymnastics: Pomona edges out three-peat title win

THORNTON — Pomona gymnastics won its third-straight state title on Thursday.

“It’s amazing. It really is amazing,” Pomona coach Tracey Boychuk said after the meet. “I couldn’t be prouder to be a Pomona Panther. Our school is so behind us. They were really rooting for us.”

Pomona beat Overland by 0.025 points in the Class 5A state gymnastics meet. The Panthers saw their lead fall away going into the last event, but they came up when they needed it most on the uneven bars.

“I’m so proud of this team for everything that we’ve done,” the Panthers’ Kaylie Berens said. “We had to fight to get back, but we pulled it together.”

Pomona also claimed the all-around title as Berens (38.8) edged out Arvada West’s Shaye Mathais (38.675).

“I was not expecting this by any means,” Berens said. “I was more worried about the team, but it’s an amazing feeling. I’m proud of myself. It’s been one of my best meets.”

As the events went on, it became clear that the team race would come down to two teams: Pomona and Overland.

Pomona held a slim lead over Overland and Thornton after one rotation. The Panthers turned in a score of 46.90 on the floor, while Overland followed with 46.50 on beam and Thornton posted a 46.35 on vault.

“Stay positive. You have to keep being in it,” Berens said. “We tried really hard not to worry about what everyone else was doing. We knew that if we did our best, we would come out on top.”

Pomona’s 47.825 on vault saw the Panthers begin to find some distance in the team race. Overland stayed close with a score of 46.50 on bars, while Thornton fell off with a 46 on beam.

Overland knew it had to put something together with its best two events coming up. The Trailblazers responded with a 47.75 on floor.

Pomona’s beam score of 45.575 put them down by 0.45 heading to the last rotation.

The Panther’s Kelsey Boychuk did not have her score counted on the balance beam because of a rule violation, which put Overland in first place for a moment.

“Her score did not count because of the time it took for her to recover from an injury,” CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann said. “The time exceeded the allotted time allowed for her to remount and complete her routine.”

Pomona came up with the performance it needed on the uneven bars. Pomona finished with a 47.775 on the bars, while Overland was unable to make up the ground with a 47.30 on vault.

“We wanted to really focus on ourselves and us as a team,” Tracey Boychuk said. “Do what we know the girls can do. Focus on what they’re doing and not worry what everyone else was doing.”

The Panthers finished with 188.075 points to win their third-straight title. Overland finished with 188.05 — good for a runner-up finish.

“So many people told me that we lost,” Berens said after the meet. “I was so expecting them to call Pomona as second. But, they called Overland (as the second place finisher) and it was insane, I couldn’t even believe it. I’m on top of the world right now.”

Thornton, Broomfield and Lakewood rounded out the top five.

Cross country roundup: State field clearing up after Thursday’s regionals

Palmer Ridge’s Isabella Prosceno has a solid plan when embarking on her races.

She starts strong, paces herself with the head of the pack and then pulls away for the win. That’s the plan she utilized on Thursday at the Class 4A region 2 cross country meet. She got the desired result.

“I tend to run as hard as I can in every race,” Prosceno said. “Even though it gets hard on certain things, I just go hard every time.”

Prosceno took the win for the Bears, but it was Air Academy who grabbed the overall team win for 4A girls. The Bears didn’t come away empty-handed though as the boys team took first.

It was also a good day for the Vanguard School. The girls team grabbed first place while Nick Lovato won the overall 2A boys race.

“My hope was that I would run my fastest to get my team to state,” Lovato said. “I decided the best way to do that was to take first.”

Peyton won the 2A boys team title.

At the same venue, Mountain Vista swept the 5A team titles.

Monarch took three of the top four spots at the 5A Region 3 boys cross country meet to win the region.

The Coyotes had 40 team points.

“We wanted our team to win this regional,” Charlie Perry said. “The best way for us to do that is, I have to go out and get one point. So, my mind was on what I’m going to do, because I know the rest of the guys will take care of their job.

“As you just saw, they came through in the spots they needed to as well.”

Perry took first with a time of 15:50.

“I felt pretty good today, so I figured it wouldn’t be too bad to go out on my own for a little bit,” Perry said. “This is a starter for the postseason so it’s a big deal to come out and win.”

In the girls race, Legacy sophomore Brynn Siles beat out the field with a time of 18:28.

Fairview won the team title with 64 points.

The Knights’ Isabella Bowland finished with a time of 19:16, good for a fifth-place finish.
